The WiFi finally became the flashpoint after nearly a decade of a 28-year-old man gaming through the night in a house everyone else kept paying for.

About eight years ago, the poster's girlfriend's younger brother moved back in with his wife after leaving the Marines. The plan was supposed to be temporary. He had the GI Bill, a promise of education, and the idea of a long-term career path ahead of him. The household backed that plan with everything it had: no rent, no utilities, no internet bill, no food costs, cooked meals, help finding work, resources, encouragement, all of it.

But "temporary" stretched on. School never really happened. A serious job never stuck. Instead, the brother spent most of his time gaming, staying up until sunrise and sleeping until around 3 PM. When guests came over, he mostly disappeared into his room. The years kept passing anyway.

His wife, meanwhile, worked full time as a cashier and supported both of them. Eventually, she cheated and left. In her exit, she said she no longer felt anything for someone who had lost all ambition and passion for life. The poster called the cheating wrong, but said the resentment made sense.

After the divorce, the brother admitted he had wasted years and promised to change. The family rallied again. Then the girlfriend's parents moved back onto the property to emotionally support him too. The house had originally been bought by them and later transferred into the poster and girlfriend's names, so the place was technically theirs, but still firmly tied to family. Nothing changed.

Now 28, the brother still spent nearly all day in his room gaming. The poster says they raised the issue many times, only to run into anger or vague explanations that he was "working on a study program" or "figuring things out." Those plans never materialized. Even the parents said they were tired of talking to him.

Two weeks before the post, the poster quietly set a bedtime pause on the WiFi, cutting it off from 12 AM to 6 AM. Since the poster and girlfriend pay basically all the utilities, the change was meant to hit no one except the brother.

Instead, the girlfriend exploded. She was upset the change had been made without telling her, and said she couldn't sleep knowing there was tension in the house because of it. She tied the feeling to childhood memories of her grandparents controlling things and making her feel like she had no freedom.

The poster said they understood that, but also pointed out that she is not a child anymore, and neither is her brother.

In an update, the poster said they sat down seriously with the girlfriend and laid out the future. They said they cannot keep living where one person refuses accountability while everyone else carries the burden. The next step is deadlines and measurable action: VA resources first, then career workshops, employment assistance programs, and whatever else might actually move things forward.

The poster said they are willing to support someone who is trying. Not someone who won't help themselves. And if nothing changes, they said, they may need to move out.
