The easiest place to crash before a 6 a.m. flight just turned into a family fight.

A woman in her early 20s and her boyfriend needed to be at the airport by 3 a.m. Her parents' house was the obvious answer: it was only about 20 minutes from the airport, while both her apartment and her boyfriend's house were more than 45 minutes away. Her parents even offered to let them stay there and drive them in, so they wouldn't have to pay for parking.

At first, it sounded perfect.

Then her dad put one condition on it: the boyfriend could not sleep in her room. Her mom was fine with the couple staying together, but her dad was not. He wanted the boyfriend to sleep in the guest room because they were "not married and should not sleep together under his roof."

The poster said she understood where he was coming from and would respect his rule. But she was uncomfortable with the arrangement, so she told her dad they would just stay at her apartment instead.

That did not go over well.

Her dad got mad and said he wanted to be the one to drive them to the airport. He asked why she was making such a big deal out of it, since the whole thing was supposed to be a simple overnight stop before an early flight.

The poster said she has an "amazing relationship" with her dad and hates arguing with him. She called him her hero and said she respects him "the hell out of him." But she was also stuck on the feeling that the separate-rooms rule was personal. In a later edit, she explained that she was fine sleeping on her own. What bothered her was the message it sent: "he does not trust me to stay that way under his roof."

There was another layer, too. This was not a routine boyfriend situation for her. She said her boyfriend did "not know about this at all," and that he was "the first man I have ever asked to stay over" and her first serious boyfriend.

Then came the comparison that made the whole thing sting more. She said her 17-year-old younger brother had been allowed to have his 17-year-old girlfriend stay behind closed doors, but she was not being given the same treatment.

So the choice landed between two awkward options: follow her dad's rule and let the boyfriend sleep in the guest room, or avoid the entire setup and drive more than 45 minutes in the middle of the night instead.
