THE DOORMAT FEUD
Two horror-obsessed neighbors spar over a Spirit Halloween doormat, their hallway feud escalating through flips and tempers and leaving everyone uncertain about boundaries and belonging.

The doormat didn't just get flipped this time, it got thrown outside the stairwell.
For a pair of 32-year-olds in a fourth-floor apartment, that was the latest escalation in a feud over a horror-themed rug they'd kept by their door for two years: an "Art the Clown" doormat from Spirit Halloween. The poster and their wife say they're huge horror fans, and that the mat isn't a seasonal decoration to them at all. It's just something they like.
They'd lived in the apartment for four years without much trouble. Then, last month, new neighbors moved in across the hall: a family with two kids, one baby and one child who seemed to be about 3 or 4.
A couple days after the move-in, everyone crossed paths while carrying in groceries. The poster introduced themselves and shook hands. The dad took one look at the mat and said, "still Halloween huh?" The poster laughed it off.
That could have been the end of it. Instead, the Ring camera started catching a pattern.
Four separate times, the poster and their spouse came home to find the neighbors had flipped the doormat over. Each time, they turned it back. At first, they let it go.
Then a couple days ago, they caught the neighbors in the act.
The poster asked what the problem was. The answer, they say, was that the neighbors' son was "super afraid of it." But the child, standing right there, looked fine. The mom, on the other hand, was the only one who seemed truly upset. According to the poster, she swore at them and rolled her eyes.
After that exchange, the wife waited until the neighbors went inside and flipped the mat back over. The poster stayed outside with the dad, who said he understood it was their space, said he'd talk to his wife, and added that "his son was old enough to understand it couldn't hurt him."
This morning, the mat was gone from the doorway altogether.
"It was thrown outside of the stairwell," the poster wrote. Since they live on the fourth floor, they took that as deliberate, not an accident.
Now the wife wants to bring it to management. The poster is worn down by the whole thing and is thinking about getting rid of the mat entirely, even though they'd rather keep it.
"I kinda wanna throw it away, but I also wanna keep it. Idk, I'm just confused yall."
