The wedding reception centerpiece came with a death sentence: the bride said the live betta fish would be "flushed... down the toilet alive."
At a wedding years ago, a coworker noticed something unusual on the dinner tables. Instead of flowers or candles, each centerpiece held a small bowl with a live betta fish inside. The fish were part of the décor, sitting quietly in glass as guests ate and talked around them.
Near the end of the evening, the coworker asked the bride what would happen to the fish after the reception. The answer was blunt. According to the story passed along later at work, the bride said the plan was to "flush them all down the toilet alive."
The coworker did not let that happen.
She took the fish home instead, saving every one she could. Then, on Monday, she showed up at work with a new question for the office: who wanted to adopt a betta fish?
That is how the narrator ended up with one of the wedding centerpieces. The fish came home and, with a little humor, got christened the "rescue betta." It was a tiny survivor from a wedding table, handed off not to be admired, but to be kept alive.
The setup was a little more improvised than glamorous. The narrator later noted that the fish spent less than a day in a wine glass before being moved into a five-gallon tank. It was a far cry from the reception décor it had started as, but it worked.
And it worked for a long time.
The "rescue betta" lived for almost five years.
Years later, the story still landed the same way when it was retold: a wedding centerpiece, a midnight rescue, and a Monday morning adoption offer at work. The fish that was supposed to be flushed instead got a second life, and one coworker walked away from a wedding with a new pet and a very memorable origin story.
