The pregnant girlfriend wanted a big-brother moment. Instead, she got told her baby would be no different from the three other children the dad already had with other women.
A 17-year-old boy had spent most of his life with his mom, seeing his dad only one day a month. Even that tiny schedule had been dragged through court. The narrator and his mom had tried to end the visitation altogether, but the judge kept it in place because the dad had never missed a day. The arrangement would continue until the boy turned 18 in October.
The dad's history was already messy. He had dated several women and had three other children by different women. The narrator was never brought into those kids' lives. His mom was once given the chance to let him know them, but he wasn't interested, so she said no. Those children were being raised by the men their mothers were married to, so the dad paid no child support for them. He also owed the narrator's mom a large amount of money, though she would not say how much until her son was legally an adult.
Then came the new girlfriend, pregnant and eager to fold the narrator into her pregnancy. She only knew about him, and she kept trying to involve him anyway. She invited him baby shopping. She asked him to come see a special scan. Each time, he showed no interest, and each time she seemed surprised.
At one point, she asked why he was not excited to be a big brother.
That was when he answered her directly. He told her this wasn't the first kid his dad had with someone else, that he had nothing to do with those kids, and that it would be no different with her baby. He said, "I consider myself an only child." He added that would not change because his dad "knocks up women at random."
The girlfriend broke down. She got very upset, wanted to believe he was lying, and then cried, saying she wanted better for her baby. He shot back, "you picked the wrong guy to have that with."
After that, she stayed locked in the room for the rest of the visit.
Before he left, the dad told him to apologize. He refused.
A few days later, the girlfriend texted the boy's mom asking for an apology and asking to hear that he would try to be a good brother to her child. The mom ignored the message. The narrator expects the issue may come up again the next time he has to visit.
