THE DIVORCE DIVIDE
A Reddit thread about divorce contrasts men's loneliness with women's liberation as a narrator recalls a troubled marriage marked by drug use and overspending.
Was this escape or a marriage he could not save?

One divorce post on Reddit starts with a split screen: men who say they are "very hard" hit by divorce, and women who say it was "the best thing they ever did."
The writer says they see the pattern "very consistently on Reddit." In one version, men are left wishing they could "go back and try harder, change things," and end up "very lonely." In the other, women say they "broke free, found a new freedom and are living [their] best lives."
Then comes the question the poster wants answered: were some men the ones who "would have tried to move mountains" but "couldn't make the women happy no matter what"? Or is it the other way around, "The women want the marriage, then start getting dissatisfied?"
The writer then turns the lens on their own marriage.
"I tried everything," they write. But, in their telling, "She took and took and it wasn't enough."
They say their ex "turned into a different person than I met," and that change altered how they saw her. "It made me not see her the same," the post says. The result was resentment, with the relationship becoming something they no longer recognized.
The poster says their ex noticed that shift. They also say she "was not willing to change" or work on the problems she brought into the marriage after they were already married. Two of those issues are spelled out plainly: "all day drug use and reckless spending."
By the end, the post circles back to the same divide it opened with. The writer says, "Now she leaves, and I'm sure that's what she's saying." In other words, they believe she would describe the breakup the same way the women in those Reddit threads do: as escape, as freedom, as relief.
The post closes with a small invitation and a big unresolved question: "Just a thought, open to opinions."
