Pantry vinegar or hardware vinegar?

The mold never budged, the grout stayed skungy, and all the "just use vinegar" advice kept falling flat, until one person discovered there was a whole other kind of vinegar.

The poster says they were "literally 44 years old" before learning that the vinegar in a grocery store is not the same stuff sold at a hardware store. For years, they had used the ordinary white vinegar most people keep around for cooking, light cleaning, and laundry. It worked for some jobs, but not the one that kept coming up again and again: mold and mildew. They say the advice to "just use vinegar to clean mold and mildew" "generally didn't do jack squat."

The missing piece turned out to be strength. At the hardware store, there is 30% vinegar, the kind they describe as "DO NOT GET THIS SHIT ON YOUR SKIN" vinegar. It's not the mellow kitchen bottle. It's the heavy-duty stuff meant for cleaning, especially things like mold off grout.

That distinction suddenly made sense of a lot of failed scrubbing. The poster says they usually bought cleaning supplies from regular retail stores, not big box home improvement places, and "regular retail chains def did not carry the strong stuff." So the advice they had been reading never led them to the version that could actually do the work.

Then came the test case: a gutter draining over cement that always got skungy. Bleach had helped before, but only briefly; the grime came right back. The 30% vinegar, though, stripped it down and kept it gone.

The same jar went to work on rust, too. The poster says it took rust off "a couple dozen tools," with one important warning: it "will also strip off shiny metallic coatings." This was not a gentle pantry ingredient anymore. It was a cleaner with a very different edge.

By the end, the poster couldn't believe none of the old "just use vinegar" advice had ever spelled out that there were two versions in play. They asked whether this was news to anyone else or whether they were "Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber realizing we landed on the moon."
