After 21 years at a major national media company, the poster says they were sent into a room, told they were part of a mass layoff, and had their laptop taken away on the spot.
"I'm still trying to process all of this and could really use some perspective," they wrote from Chicago, where the shutdown hit with almost no warning. The poster said the company had built their career for more than two decades, only for it to end abruptly: "I was called into a room, told I was part of a mass layoff, handed the news, had my laptop taken, and that was basically it."
What came next made the situation even harder to untangle. The poster said there was "No real explanation, no transition, nothing." Then they followed up with HR the next day and learned two more things: "I'm not getting any severance," and they are "apparently restricted from working for a competitor for 6 months."
That leaves them in a tight spot. No severance. No transition pay. And a six-month non-compete that reaches directly into the only industry they've spent their career in. "This whole thing feels incredibly one-sided," they wrote.
The pressure at home is part of the picture too. The poster said, "I've got 3 kids to support," and described the situation as especially overwhelming. With no income support and a restriction on their next move, they're trying to figure out what can even be done.
Their questions are direct: "Is it actually legal to enforce a non-compete when there's no severance or compensation tied to it?" They also asked, "Has anyone successfully challenged something like this?" And: "Is it even worth pursuing an employment lawyer, or will a massive corporation just drag things out until it's not worth it?"
The post closes with the same urgency that runs through the whole thing: "Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's been through something similar, especially if you had any success pushing back." They end simply: "Thanks in advance."
For now, the poster is left with a sudden layoff, no severance, and a six-month roadblock hanging over their next job move.
