Future mother-in-law's $25,000 "gift" turned into a stolen wedding venue, a secret planner, and a hard cutoff.

It started with a check and a bad feeling. The poster had already raised the alarm in an earlier update: future MIL had offered $25,000 toward the wedding, but it came with obvious "strings attached." The poster worried the money would buy control, not generosity.

So the poster and fiancé sat down with future MIL and had a heart-to-heart, with the fiancé there for backup. They told her she had not respected their choices around the wedding: the guest list, the gown, and the venue. The poster made one thing clear: "we aren't depositing the check until we have this conversation and we're all on board about how we move forward."

Future MIL cried. She apologized. She said, "I just wanted everything to be perfect," and admitted she was sad she "never had a daughter who she can play a normal motherly role in wedding planning" with. After that, things seemed to settle. The couple deposited the check and moved from "spitballing ideas" to "confirming vendors."

Then the venue plan started slipping. The restaurant they wanted for the reception was no longer available for their date, so they began looking at other places. A few days later, a wedding planner called.

The fiancé explained the planner was supposed to handle background admin work. The poster met with her twice, walked through the wedding vision, and was told she would handle the kind of appointments that usually eat up a couple's calendar: venue bookings, cake tastings, and more. Then the planner sent over a list of large venues.

At the first appointment, she dropped a detail that made the poster stop cold. Future MIL had told her the couple was considering expanding the wedding and would need a bigger space.

Then the poster's mom made a call to the original restaurant.

That was when the shit hits the fan.

The restaurant confirmed future MIL had already booked and paid a deposit for the private function room, using the poster's mom's "sister" as a cover story. The poster later summed it up bluntly: "this bitch booked the fucking venue out from under us."

The fiancé confronted future MIL immediately. She was removed from planning, cut off from the planner, and told vendors would be password protected. Her role was reduced to guest only. The couple transferred the money back into her account.

There would be no more help, no more planning access, no more leverage. "No speech, no mother/son dance," the poster said. "I'm going no contact."

They said they would remain polite at the wedding to avoid drama, then return to no contact afterward. The fiancé supported the decision completely.
