An old college video sent one boyfriend recoiling in disgust, and the woman in it was his girlfriend.

For a little over a year, the couple had looked solid. They met at a literary convention, and the poster described her boyfriend, 25, as considerate, communicative, affectionate, and "a great guy." There had been no major issues. Then an old clip from college changed the mood in one second.

The woman, 24, explained that she had been heavier growing up and was still on the heavier side by age 20. In college, a traumatic prank involving a group of girls made her realize how people saw her body. After that, she lost 100 pounds in two years and changed almost everything about her appearance, her style, haircut and color, and makeup. A lot of the people in her current life only knew her after the weight loss.

An old college friend and former roommate came to stay while attending a nearby wedding. Because the poster didn't talk much about college, her boyfriend was eager to hear stories. The friend mentioned a dance competition they had won early in sophomore year, then pulled up a video from her camera roll.

The poster was in the middle of cleaning up after dinner when she walked out and saw them watching it. In the clip, her younger self appeared. Her boyfriend leaned back and blurted out, "the one next to the humpback?"

The room went still.

The friend looked shocked. The poster realized he meant her. She asked him directly if he was talking about her, clarified that "the humpback" was her, and told him to leave. He started apologizing over and over, saying he had no idea and would never speak about her that way. She told him he had already done it, and she needed space. He left. She cried most of that night.

The next morning, he caught her on her daily run with flowers and coffee. He apologized again and told her she was the most beautiful girl he knew. She said it was fine, but asked him to keep the gifts for now.

Since then, she says she recoils when he touches her and hasn't been reaching out first. He noticed and asked a mutual friend for advice. That friend found an old picture of her through a college acquaintance's Instagram, and soon the image had spread through the friend group.

Then the messages started. Multiple friends told her he couldn't have known and that she shouldn't be upset because she knew he was into fit girls. She told them to stay out of it and asked her boyfriend why he had involved them. When he found out what they had done, he got furious, then started crying, saying he didn't want to lose her and didn't know what to do.

She tried to reassure him. He said he knew it wasn't fine because she didn't look at him like she loved him anymore.

Now she says nothing feels the same. She still sees him as a good man, and she says people are allowed to have types. But she also says she can't look at him the same way, and doesn't want to lose him over "one small thing."
