The first time the poster heard why their grandparents had vanished from their childhood, it came with a number attached: around 200k.
For years, the family had not been talking to the grandparents, and the poster says they never really knew why. That changed when the grandparents asked to meet. The poster agreed.
At the meeting, the grandparents laid out the history. When the poster was about 8, the mother had an affair. At the time, the poster had been told the parents were getting a divorce, and life had already started to split in two, time with each parent, back and forth, until the father died in a car crash when the poster was 9.
Then came the funeral.
According to the grandparents, and with the mother confirming the basics, they saw the poster there and got into a fight with the mother. Because the parents were not actually divorced yet, the mother got everything from the father. The grandparents said that in the heat of that fight, they called the mother names, including "a whore." After that, they were not allowed to see the poster again.
That was the explanation for years of silence.
Then came the part that changed everything else: the grandparents said they have an account for college, or "whatever I want to use," worth "around 200k." The poster thanked them and has stayed in contact since.
The mother found out.
When she learned the poster had been talking to the grandparents, she fought with them again and came down hard on her child for it. She was angry that the poster was speaking to them and, in her words, had "took the money." She said the poster had "betrayed her," and that the grandparents had been cruel.
The poster's answer was blunt: "the shoe fit."
Now the family is split over what happened next. The poster says, "I don't live with her, I have my own place," but the mother is still upset at home. The sister says the poster needs to apologize because the mother is angry.
