The fight started with a remarriage and a basement apartment.
A man asked whether he was the asshole for telling his 30-something daughter to move out of his house after she announced a new wedding, and then said she planned to keep living there anyway.
The daughter had moved back in about four years earlier, after a divorce. Since then, she had been living rent-free with him and his wife in the basement of their home. It was not a bare room tucked under the stairs, either: she had roughly 1,000 square feet to herself, with a full bath, bed, and living area. The only shared space was the kitchen.
By the poster's account, the arrangement had mostly been fine. But it was still another adult in the house, and he said that made things inconvenient. Now the situation was changing again.
His daughter is getting remarried.
That was where the conversation turned. She told her father and stepmother that she would keep living with them, while her new husband stayed in his own apartment for now. His place, she said, was small. According to the poster, the husband's apartment is a two-bedroom, one-bath place with a small one-room kitchen and living area.
The poster did not like that plan. He told her, directly, that "her presence here is inconvenient for us." He also said he believed she was staying at the house out of fear of inconveniencing her new husband.
The daughter's response was simple: they are looking for a house, and she said they would be "out soon."
That answer did not settle things. The poster said he was worried that "out soon" could turn into years, and he asked whether he was wrong for wanting her to leave his house and move in with her husband instead.
The basic facts are straightforward. After a divorce, the daughter returned home and has lived there rent-free for four years. She now has a new marriage coming up, but wants to stay in the basement apartment a little longer while the couple looks for a house. Her father says that arrangement is no longer workable.
