A 30-year-old realized the drink that had been carrying them for a decade was probably also wrecking them: Monster Energy Zero was their only hydration, and the "caffeine immune" story they'd told themselves had finally collapsed.
The writer opens on a throwaway account, saying they feel incredibly stupid. Then they point to a Reddit post about someone who drank only Coke Zero for years, suffered chronic headaches, and eventually found out they were badly dehydrated or reacting to ingredients in the soda. That story hit close enough to sting, because theirs was basically the Monster Energy version.
For the last 10 years, Monster Absolutely Zero, the blue one, had been the source of almost all their fluids. It started at around age 20, with one or two Zero cans a day. Then, over the last three years, it climbed to a minimum of four or five cans every single day.
Water barely existed in the routine. Maybe one glass when waking up, maybe one before bed if they felt especially "dry," but otherwise nothing for 16 hours a day. "Water wasn't even in my vocabulary. I was conditioned," they wrote. Sit down to work or game, and the craving kicked in automatically. They called it a "Pavlovian response." Nothing else tasted "right."
That became proof, in their mind, that caffeine didn't touch them. They could crack a Monster at 11 p.m. and still fall asleep. So for years, they told themselves, "I had developed a 'caffeine immunity.'"
Meanwhile, their body was sending a different report. They went to doctors because they felt chronically flat and exhausted. They looked ashen and pale, with dark eye circles getting worse. They couldn't lose weight despite what they described as a massive calorie deficit. Sometimes their pulse would race, or they'd feel heart palpitations while just sitting still.
Then, about one or two months ago, while looking into the dark circles under their eyes, the obvious started to click. They probably weren't immune to caffeine. They were heavily conditioned, and likely "dangerously dehydrated / stressed."
So they changed course. Monster was cut back to a maximum of two cans, never after 3 p.m. Everything else became water with lemon.
Even now, they admit it's still hard to stay away from Monster when they're thirsty. They like the taste of Monster Absolutely Zero, and there isn't a no-caffeine version to swap in. But the old story is over. They posted it as a "closing chapter," part warning, part laugh, and ended with the line: "turns out, I'm not immune; I was just a moron."
