THE BBQ BLOWUP

The cops were called on an uninvited family at an adults-only BBQ, and the husband who planned the party went quiet while his wife told them to get out.

For three years, the narrator had been waiting for the fallout from a single brutal day to fade. She is 34, married to John for nine years, and they have three kids. Most of John's family is a hard no for her, except his sister, whom she calls "Scum." For the first five years of the marriage, Scum had even been her best friend.

Then, three years ago, Scum's husband "laid hands" on the narrator's son. The boy was six. He came away with bruises on his face in three places. John reacted by fighting Scum's husband, but Scum sided with her husband, lied to police, and pressed charges against John. John was arrested. The charges were later dropped, but the damage stuck around. The narrator says no one in the area would take their son's case, and Scum's husband walked free with a protection order against them.

After that, the only family member they still spoke to was John's mother, and even that was tense. The narrator says MIL kept pushing them to apologize to Scum's husband "for the sake of family." They refused and told her not to bring them up around them anymore.

Then came last weekend.

It had been three years since the incident and one year since the charges were dropped and the protection order became void. John planned a BBQ at their new home. The narrator's family couldn't come because they live in Florida, so the guest list was mostly friends, plus John's mother.

MIL showed up with backup: Scum, Scum's 13-year-old daughter, Scum's 23-year-old stepdaughter, John's aunt, John's uncle, and the uncle's 12-year-old daughter. The narrator asked John why Scum was there. His answer was blunt: "I have no f*cking clue. Probably because of my mother. I will handle it."

He didn't.

According to the narrator, John went mute. He didn't confront his mother. He didn't say anything when Scum tried to smooth it over, insisting "all of this was a big misunderstanding and could be resolved if we would just apologize and move on."

That was the moment the party blew apart.

The narrator told them all to leave. Scum argued back, saying the whole thing was overblown and that the narrator should understand because she would "do the same thing" in Scum's shoes. The narrator snapped, calling Scum trash. Soon there were "loads of screaming," and neighbors called the police.

When officers arrived, the narrator told them Scum and the others had not been invited, that they were trespassing, and why they were not welcome around her or her children. The police were in a different town and did not know Scum's history. The narrator says they "didnt take lightly to the information" once Scum argued with them.

Afterward, the backlash started. The narrator says she's being called a "problem" and accused of trying to get Scum attacked in front of her children over an old issue. John isn't speaking to her and says she should have let him handle it because it was his family.

The narrator says the children were not there at all. It was an adults-only BBQ, and the kids were with friends. She says MIL knew that, and brought the two children anyway.
