The birthday gift died in an envelope.
A 25-year-old woman thought she had found the perfect present for her boyfriend of more than three years: concert tickets to see Imagine Dragons. She knew the band, figured he'd recognize them too, and hoped the night would double as a date. Along with the tickets, she added smaller gifts and handed him the confirmation in a card she had made herself.
His reaction was immediate and flat.
"uhhhhhh.. what?" he said, before explaining, "this is not the music I like.. just because a band has instruments doesn't mean it's what I like."
She pushed back, asking whether he really wouldn't have fun. He didn't soften. "honestly you should just try to get your money back, I don't want to go to this," he told her. He even started looking up other concerts around the same date and suggested they resell the tickets.
That's when the fight started.
The poster said she was hurt that he'd shot down something she had tried to make thoughtful and shared. He told her she should have known better after three years together, and compared it to him never buying her Travis Scott tickets because he knows she hates rap. "we have been dating for 3 years, how did you not know that I don't like that music? I wouldn't get you tickets to the Travis Scott concert for your birthday because I am well aware you hate rap. You should have known I wouldn't like this," he said.
She cried and said she had wanted to do something together. When he tried to backtrack and said they could still go and it would be fun, she snapped back: "fuck no."
He then got upset that she wouldn't resell the tickets or go with him, saying it was basically like he got nothing for his birthday.
In her first replies, the poster tried to explain that she thought he would like it because "he likes bands." Commenters quickly pointed out the obvious gap in that logic. "Bands" is not a genre.
She later admitted she may have overreacted and said she could have done more research. She also clarified what kinds of music he actually likes, listing: "the growlers?, king gizzard and the wizard lizard?, the front bottoms?, the walters?, and post animal?"
The next day, she came back with an update. She apologized, said she had been acting selfish, and decided to sell the tickets. He apologized too, saying he had hurt her feelings. They agreed to find another show, and he would split the cost of the new tickets with her.
