A best friend asked for $3,000 in a panic, refused to say what it was for, and then unfollowed the other friend when the money didn't come through.

About a month ago, the poster got a call at work from their best friend, who was sounding frantic. He said his wife was "getting in trouble at work" and needed $3,000 right away. No details. No breakdown. Just a number and a promise that he'd pay it back after taking money out of his 401k.

The poster didn't say yes. They didn't say no, either. They told him they'd talk about it later.

By that night, the emergency had apparently changed shape. The friend called back and said he "got it covered."

For a week after that, he kept his distance. When the poster asked what was going on, he said asking another man for money hurt his pride "as a man," and asked for time.

Then, a month or so later, the story behind the request shifted again.

The money, the friend said, was really supposed to help his wife with her horses because "his wife's boss was causing problems." That was the explanation the poster got after all the secrecy, the panic, and the silence.

The poster said $3,000 was a lot, more than they make in a month, and that they didn't think they would have been able to loan it anyway. They also said that if they were in his situation, they would have gone to family for help.

That answer didn't land.

Today, the friend unfollowed the poster on social media and came back with a blunt accusation: the poster should have helped because "that's what best friends do." He said he would've helped if asked. He said he thinks the friendship is over.

The whole thing started with a vague emergency call and a request for thousands of dollars. It moved through a late-night "got it covered," then a confession about pride, then a strange explanation involving horses and a boss causing problems. It ended with an unfollow, a broken friendship, and a direct accusation that the poster should have stepped in.
