A "strictly confidential" secret passed through one family, and landed in a full-blown fight within hours.

The writer's sister-in-law, who holds political office in the municipality where they all live, pulled the writer aside with something time-sensitive. It was not "top secret," but it was tied to her position and needed to stay quiet for only a couple of days until the right meeting could happen. Even so, SIL was clear: the writer could not tell anyone, "not even my partner," her brother. For four days, the only people supposed to know were the writer and MIL, because SIL had also told her mother.

Then the partner walked in the next day and started talking. The writer says he began sharing what was clearly the same secret, as if he assumed it was still just making its way through the family. The writer cut him off and said, "I was already aware of it." When asked where he had heard it, he answered that "my mother had told him."

That changed everything. A few hours later, the writer told SIL that unfortunately her mother had passed the secret on. SIL confronted MIL. The result was not a quiet clarification, but a huge family argument.

The partner immediately blamed the writer for the fallout. The writer says he argued that the family was now in conflict because the writer "didn't keep my mouth shut." In other words, the problem was not the leak itself, but the fact that it had been named.

During the confrontation, MIL reportedly kept shifting her story. First she denied telling the partner anything. Then she suggested her husband might have told him. Then she accused the writer of being the one who had leaked it. The writer says that in their family, conflict resolution usually means acting normal afterward, sweeping everything under the rug, and pretending nothing happened.

The tension did not end there. In the update, the writer says they later told MIL, "I would not be discussing this situation any further." They also say their partner's loyalty has always come last, and describe the family dynamic as one where problems are ignored instead of resolved.

The latest update says SIL now plans to distance herself from the family. The writer says they expect to be blamed for that too: "Guess who'll be held responsible for that lol."
