A ring was already picked out when the relationship blew up.

For almost three years, a 28-year-old man and his 27-year-old girlfriend had been building what looked like a straightforward future: they lived together, both had good jobs, their families got along, and marriage was already on the horizon. He says he was not against proposing. In fact, he'd been looking forward to it. The only thing he hadn't done was give her a date, because he wanted the proposal to be a surprise.

At first, he says, she seemed fine with that.

Then, over the last six months, the pressure started creeping in. What had once been normal conversation about marriage turned into jokes and comments about when he would "put a ring on it." After that, the tone sharpened. Any disagreement, he says, could somehow loop back to the same line: "this is why you haven't proposed yet."

The real shock came last week.

He saw a message preview on her iPad and clicked it. Inside was a group chat with her friends, and the thread was about how to push him into proposing. According to his description, they were discussing tactics like giving him the cold shoulder, not putting in effort, making him feel like he'd done something wrong, and withholding physical intimacy. They also talked about using her birthday as a deadline and making it seem like there were other options if he still hadn't proposed.

He confronted her directly and asked whether she had been trying to get him to propose with those "weird tricks." She admitted it, saying she had been trying to get "some clarity and not waste any more time." Then, according to him, she added that he should just propose already because if he were serious he would have already done it.

That was the end of the proposal plan.

He told her, flatly, "I'm not proposing." And if she kept trying to manipulate him like that, he said, he was "basically off the proposal train."

Now the fight has spilled outward. He says she has told others that he is punishing her for having "some standard relationship needs," and that he is "dangling marriage as a way to control her" by not proposing fast enough. Her friends are backing her up, saying he looked at her private messages and that "you cant force someone to marry you."

For him, though, the message was already made in the group chat. He says the whole thing made him realize "that our relationship has been treated like some kind of game by her."
