At a family dinner she had not hosted in two years, a mother-in-law decided to bring up money, and got thrown out of the house instead.
The poster says she has been with her husband for eight years and they share a 2-year-old daughter. For the first six years, she says, he "could not hold a job down to save his life," something she links to untreated ADHD and depression. During that stretch, she was the one keeping everything afloat: paying the bills, covering the household, and even supporting his family.
That support was not small. She says she gave his sister, brother, and sometimes his mother "right around $50k" over the years, helping with mortgage payments, car payments, food, and sports fees. She says she never asked for repayment.
Then came the request that snapped the arrangement. At a family meeting, her mother-in-law said "the whole family" needed to chip in for another family's lawyer fees. The poster put in $3,000. Later, she learned she was the only one who actually contributed. That, she says, was "the last straw."
Around the same time, she found out she was six months pregnant. Not long after, her husband finally got on ADHD medication, started therapy, earned his trucking license, and began working steadily. He has been employed since she was about eight months pregnant. She left the workforce and became a stay-at-home mom. She says he now makes around four times what she made at the hospital.
The money issue went quiet for a while. Then his family made it everyone's problem again.
After not all being together for two years, the whole family came over for dinner. The husband was out at the store when his mother asked when the poster planned to return to work. She said she had no plan to go back until their daughter was in school. That set off her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, who argued that it was unfair to her husband that she had no income and that they could no longer depend on family for help.
The poster pushed back, reminding them she had supported them for years. Her mother-in-law shot back that she had "paid back more than that" with expired food bank food and old, partially broken 1930s furniture. The poster rejected that immediately. The argument got hotter. The mother-in-law said it was unfair to her husband that she was contributing nothing to the household. The poster said he did not need repayment, and that his paying rent for two years was not repayment either.
Then she told them to "get the fuck out."
They refused at first. So she said she would call the cops. That finally got them moving. She told them they were not welcome back and that they would be going no contact.
When her husband came home, she laid out what happened. He apologized for what his family said, but then seemed to soften it, saying they may have meant she should be working too to help with bills. He added that "everyone knows that households cant survive on one income in 2026," and suggested he could work less and spend more time with their child if she got a job too.
She says the numbers don't add up to any need for that. He makes $140,000 a year, their expenses are under $4,000 a month, and he has almost $200,000 in savings.
