A teenager navigates two very different households as an uncle criticizes a cousin's parenting, sparking a clash that tests loyalty, boundaries, and family ties.

When a 14-year-old told her uncle she did not want to grow up like his kids, he ended the visit on the spot and called her an "spoiled entitled brat that thinks I'm better than them."
The teen's family situation had been set in motion years earlier, after her mother died following a long illness. Before she passed, the mother arranged for her daughter to go to her best friend, Katie. But the poster's uncle, Nick, fought for custody, arguing that she should be raised with family.
Katie won custody and later adopted her. Even so, the girl still spends time with Nick's household about one weekend a month, though lately those visits have been cut back because of her schedule. The arrangement is not court-ordered; Katie has said she wants her to keep a connection with her biological family.
The two homes could not be more different.
Katie and her husband are both doctors. The teen has been in private school her entire life, does competitive cheerleading and competitive dance, and plays piano. She used to play clarinet, but gave it up to make more time for cheer. At Katie's house, she also works for her allowance, then has her earnings matched at the end of the month.
Nick, by contrast, is a cop, and his wife is a preschool teacher. His kids are homeschooled, mostly for political reasons, and spend time in church youth group and youth choir. They do not do many other activities, and Nick gives them money whenever they need it.
Last weekend, the poster was at Nick's house when he started complaining about Katie's parenting. He said the teen never had free time and asked whether "wouldn't it be nice to slow down and get to be a kid like his kids do."
That set her off. She said she likes her life and would never want to be like his kids. She pointed to what was coming next for her: dual-enrollment college classes starting next year. Then she went further, criticizing her cousins' academic skills and their lack of hobbies.
Nick snapped. He told her she had no right to criticize his parenting or insult his children, then called Katie and asked her to pick the girl up early.
Katie was not on the teen's side either. She told her she should have "just smiled and nodded" and said she had gone too far. The decision was made that she would not be going to Nick's house for a while.
Now the teen says she feels bad, because she thinks she did kind of call her cousins stupid.
