The sleepover never happened. Instead, a mom pulled her 13-year-old daughter out of a friend's house after meeting the stepdad at the door, and then got confronted at school when the fallout spread.
The story starts with a throwaway account. The poster says her daughter uses her main Reddit account, so she's posting from a backup. Her 13-year-old, Elena, has a new friend at school named Kennedy. Kennedy's mom works in the school office, and the two girls have been hanging out at what the family calls "The House", the place where Elena's friends usually gather, since Elena rarely goes to other kids' homes.
So when Elena asks to sleep over at Kennedy's house before a family party, the poster says yes. Kennedy's mom has always seemed polite, and nothing about the plan seems unusual.
Then she drops Elena off.
At the door, Kennedy's stepdad answers, and the whole visit turns sour fast. The poster says he opens an alcoholic drink, flirts with her, and questions whether he can "not believe" she's old enough to have a teenage daughter. He also tells Kennedy to change out of shorts in her own house, which leaves the poster uneasy right away.
Kennedy's mom comes home while the poster is still there, and that briefly reassures her. But by then the feeling is already set. She leaves, tells her husband Elena will not be sleeping there, and they make up an excuse to pick her up early.
Later, she tells her husband she does not want Elena going back there again because she got a bad feeling. She says the stepdad gave her "the creeps."
At school pickup, the subject comes up with another mom friend. Asked why Elena didn't stay over, the poster answers honestly: she does not want Elena going there because "the stepdad gives me the creeps," and she briefly explains what happened. She says she would want to know if another parent felt the same way about her own child's safety.
Then Kennedy's mom confronts her.
According to the poster, Kennedy's mom says another mother no longer lets her daughter visit because of "males in the house without the mother home." She accuses the poster of lying just to pick Elena up early, of being a snob, and of judging the family based on where they live. She also says the poster is isolating Kennedy by "poisoning the other mom."
The poster says she didn't think she was doing that, just sharing what she saw and heard. But after the confrontation, she's left asking the same question: was she out of line for sharing her "completely unfounded opinion," and does she owe the family an apology?
