The babysitting favor was supposed to last one hour. It stretched past midnight, the kids stayed up, and now the family is furious.
It started at a family meal at the poster's sister's house, where the sister, 38, had invited the poster, their parents, and the rest of the family over for dinner. After the meal, the poster and their mom cleaned up while the dad and brother-in-law watched the nieces and nephew.
Then the parents left.
Only after that did the sister and brother-in-law ask the poster to watch the kids for a quick errand. The poster says they agreed, but made one thing clear: they had plans, and "one hour was my limit." The sister agreed. "I agreed to one hour," the poster later wrote.
An hour later, the poster called. No answer.
Half an hour after that, they texted friends to say they couldn't make it and stayed with the children instead.
What happened in the meantime was not exactly a normal bedtime routine. The poster says they "kept the kids alive," but did not put them to sleep, did not make them a snack instead of letting them use the stove, and did not stop them from doing what they were doing. The youngest eventually fell asleep on a bed. The middle child kept watching Stranger Things with the poster. The nephew stayed locked into Fortnite.
The sister came home "a little after one AM."
By then, the house was still awake. The nephew was still playing Fortnite. The middle child was still watching Stranger Things. The youngest was asleep on the bed. The poster left.
For a few days after that, the complaints started rolling in. The family said the poster had been irresponsible. One criticism was that "12 is too young for such a scary show." Another was that the nephew had limited screen time. Another was that the drawings still had not been removed from the walls.
Now the parents are involved too.
The poster says none of it matters, because the arrangement had been for one hour and that was the deal. They say they did "a great job for one hour" and that it was "Not really my problem after that."
In the end, the poster says four people think they're being an asshole, three kids had a great night, and the family "won't try it again."
