The night before their birthday, the poster found out the "surprise party" was really a setup to reunite them with their ex.

For weeks, the poster's sister Maya had been acting strange. The poster had already said they didn't like big birthdays and wanted something low-key, and Maya knew that. Still, she kept circling one question: would the poster be "free that Saturday"? When the poster pushed back and repeated they did not want a party, Maya laughed and told them they were "being no fun."

Then the whole plan slipped out.

The night before the birthday, a mutual friend accidentally mentioned the party and even what she was wearing. That was enough for the poster to start putting the pieces together. Soon they learned the full scope: the entire family was invited, the party was being held at the parents' house, coworkers were coming too, and one guest in particular made the poster furious.

Their ex was invited.

The breakup had happened about two months earlier and had gone badly. The poster had made it clear they wanted no contact. Maya had not only ignored that boundary, but kept telling them they should "just get over the whole situation."

So the poster called Maya.

Maya confirmed it. The party was not only for the birthday. It was also so everyone could see the ex again and "fix things" between them. Maya said the poster would "thank her later" and that they could "finally talk it all out."

The poster was livid. They told Maya she had no right to do this, especially after they had already said they didn't want a party. Maya fired back that the poster was "dramatic" and "bloody ungrateful," and said she planned it because the poster "wouldn't find better." In her view, it was a "good gift."

The birthday arrived, and the poster didn't go.

They turned off their phone and spent the day with their best friend instead. They had lunch, went on a walk, and stayed away from the party entirely.

Later, the fallout rolled in. Maya was furious. Other people were disappointed. Some said the poster had embarrassed Maya by not showing up. Maya accused the poster of ruining the whole party and making it all about them, "it was literally my birthday," the poster later said of that complaint. Maya wanted an apology for not attending and "at least apologise for not showing up and letting people know."

She said it had all come "out of a good place in her heart."
