Kevin tried to move in, then told a 28-year-old woman that her shower routine had to change, that she needed to be more "present" when she lived with "a man," and that "I was his and needed to act like it."
The relationship had been going on for about 18 months, and the plan was simple: at the end of November, when Kevin's lease was up, he would move into her place. A few weeks before that deadline, he made a strange comment about her evening showers.
Her showers were long for a reason. She had a steam shower, and at night she used that time to steam, shower, wash her hair, and do skincare. Kevin decided that was a problem. If they lived together, he said, she would have to stop habits like that.
That was only the beginning. He started listing the changes he expected if he moved in. She should put away her skincare items. She should stop leaving so many shoes in the mudroom. The composting service should go. Her 17-year-old brother and his friends should not be over "unsupervised." She should stop volunteering at a local shelter that houses men.
Then came the line that ended it: moving in meant, in his words, "I was his and needed to act like it."
She told him they were not moving in together. She asked him to leave. After another conversation, they mutually broke up.
She says she was sad, but not devastated. What bothered her most was the confusion, whether she had missed red flags along the way.
The people around her split fast. Her friends and baby brother said she made the right call. Her mom and aunt said the opposite. They called her selfish and unreasonable, told her she had to compromise, and insisted Kevin was "such a catch." The shouting got sharper from there: "You're selfish!" "You have to compromise in relationships!" "You can't expect him to put up with your single girl schedules and habits!" and even "you're going to die alone!"
She also repeated one line from her side of the argument: "I am not anyone's."
Her family kept pushing. One remark summed up their view: "I was doing him a favor letting him live with me rent free."
But she has already made her position clear. They are not getting back together.
