DAY BY DAY CHIVES

A Reddit poster tends a small patch of chives, posting daily updates for 64 days as spectators weigh in on perfection, while a simple image carries the thread forward.

Keep trimming the chives, or call it done?

Day 64 of the chive project had reached a simple, baffling question: are they perfect yet?

A Reddit poster kept returning to the same plant, snipping off "a couple of chives almost every day" and posting the result online, waiting for the internet to declare the chives finished. The title of the update said it plainly: "Cutting a couple of chives almost every day until this Reddit says they're perfect. Day 64."

By then, the routine had become its own little spectacle. Each day meant another cut, another check-in, another chance for strangers to weigh in on a tiny patch of green. The post did not arrive with a dramatic reveal or a grand transformation. It arrived as day 64 of the same experiment: keep trimming until the community says the chives have hit the mark.

The poster also seemed ready for the inevitable comment section debate. Chives and scallions, after all, can set off immediate confusion online, especially in a photo where a few slender green stalks are doing all the work. So the writer addressed that head-on.

"Yes guys I know the difference between chives and scallions," the poster wrote.

That was not the point, they explained. The image was there simply because it seemed better than leaving the page blank. "I just thought you would enjoy something to look at instead of nothing," the writer said.

That line gave the post its whole shape: a small daily ritual, a modest image, and a running joke stretched across 64 days. Nothing in the update suggested a final answer had arrived. The chives were still being cut. The Reddit verdict was still pending. And the poster was still feeding the thread just enough to keep people looking, one tiny crop at a time.
