A two-year relationship took a hard left when the girlfriend admitted she had sex with another man for "a few hours" right before agreeing to become exclusive.

It started as a "drunk tell me something shocking" conversation between a 26-year-old man and his 25-year-old girlfriend, after they had been together for about two years. At the time, the confession seemed like the kind of embarrassing little secret couples swap when the drinks are flowing. Instead, it turned into a rewrite of how their relationship began.

The boyfriend said that early on, after about a month of dating, he had asked her to be exclusive. She got overwhelmed, abruptly left, and later came back saying she had thought about it and did want a committed relationship. He had believed that, during her disappearance, she had gone home to "meditate" and think things over.

That version of events held for years.

Then came the truth.

During the drunken conversation, she admitted she had not gone home to reflect. She had gone to have sex with a man she had met at a party in the first week they started dating. She said she had been texting that man every few days and seeing him on and off. When exclusivity came up, she realized she would no longer be able to sleep with him without cheating, so she left, had sex with him "for a few hours," then drove to her boyfriend's place and agreed to start a committed relationship.

The boyfriend said he had assumed she spent that time thinking deeply about whether she wanted to commit. Instead, she was with someone else.

Her explanation was blunt. She said it was not cheating because they were not exclusive yet. She also said she had never told him because she did not want to ruin "the mythology" of their origin story. She framed the hookup as something she needed to get out of her system before locking in the relationship.

But for him, the revelation hit differently. He now feels blindsided by the fact that the foundation of the relationship was not what he thought it was. What he believed was a thoughtful pause had actually been a detour to sleep with another man before saying yes to exclusivity.

Now he is stuck on the same question: if this is how she handled the start of the relationship, what does that say about her view of commitment and honesty?
