A family Thanksgiving turned into a group-chat showdown when one sister told relatives they would need to bring **$100 worth of food minimum**, or help pay for the meat.
The poster says the holiday is usually a big one: siblings, parents, and kids all packed together, about 20 to 25 people in total. Their own household is just two people, plus a 6-month-old baby.
This year, the plan started simply enough. In the group chat, the nephew said he would cook the meat because he had bought a grill. The rest of the family would bring sides. According to the poster, the nephew later said he had chosen to spend $300 on meat.
The poster replied that they would bring mashed potatoes.
Then the tone changed.
The sister answered that every "family" had to bring **"$100 worth of food minimum or help my nephew pay for the meat."** The poster said they were not completely against contributing that much, but were upset that the rule was dropped into the chat like an order instead of something everyone had agreed to ahead of time.
The next day, the sister came back with a full menu of pressure. She posted three options in the group chat and ended with: **"Choose wisely..."**
The options were bluntly laid out:

The poster fired back with a fourth option: **"Option 4: don't show up."**
That was the question they brought online: would they be the asshole for skipping Thanksgiving in protest of the $100 minimum?
Then the situation got more personal.
In an update, the poster said they are a teacher, and their sister posted a picture of the poster's salary that she found online, using it to shame them in the group chat. The poster wrote: **"I'm a teacher and she posted a picture of my salary she found online to shame me in the group chat. Definitely not going now."**
What had started as a discussion about mashed potatoes and meat turned into a public family argument over money, contribution, and who was expected to pay what before Thanksgiving was even set.
