He found out his mother had been sending his girlfriend cruel messages for who knows how long, and the discovery came on her own phone.
The poster says he is usually a "stoic, emotionally-constipated idiot," while his girlfriend is basically his opposite: quiet, gentle, brilliant, and "one of the kindest people I've ever met." They've been together eight years, known each other for ten, and by all accounts have built a steady life. Then, while scrolling Instagram reels on her phone, he got a DM from one of her friends.
Attached to that message were screenshots.
As he opened them, the bottom dropped out. The screenshots showed multiple messages from his mother to his girlfriend, sent over more than one day. He does not know how long it has been going on. He only knows what was in front of him: a string of insults aimed straight at his girlfriend's appearance, worth, and place in his relationship.
The messages were brutal. One accused her of not being proposed to because she had not given him a child: "Maybe he hasn't proposed because you haven't given him a child. Men don't marry placeholders." Another jabbed at how she dressed: "If you stopped dressing like a teenage boy and put on some makeup, maybe he'd see you as a wife instead of one of his little friends." Others went after her relationship itself: "You're keeping him from his family. He used to visit." "You think you're special? You're lucky he even brought you home. Girls like you don't get commitment from men like him." And then: "You're not good enough for the life he deserves."
The part that hit hardest wasn't just the cruelty. It was that his girlfriend had never told him. She had been taking it alone, apparently while acting normal around him. He says she avoids conflict and likely did not want to force him to choose sides.
Now he is furious at his mother, not at his girlfriend. He says he wants to protect her, but without making her feel exposed or cornered. He is torn over whether to tell her he saw the messages and reassure her directly, or keep it private and handle his mother himself unless she brings it up.
"And it makes me sick that she's been dealing with this alone," he wrote. "I just want her to feel safe and supported."
