He sold his dream truck for the baby, and it wiped the smile clean off his face.
A 26-year-old pregnant woman said her 26-year-old husband had gone from upbeat gearhead to a shell of himself after making one huge decision for their growing family. They had always planned on children, but seven months earlier, the pregnancy arrived sooner than expected. Her husband took one look at the numbers and decided his beloved truck had to go.
That truck had been part of his life before they ever met. He had bought it on his own, poured money into it, and spent his free time working on it. His friends were truck guys too, and he was part of a truck club. It wasn't just a vehicle. It was his hobby, his social life, and, as it turned out, a piece of his identity.
When the baby was on the way, he worried he could not keep up with the truck payments, upkeep, and maintenance while also getting ready for a child. He made the call himself: sell the truck, buy a car, and make room in the budget.
Then everything changed.
The woman said he stopped smiling. He would come home from work, sit in front of the TV until bed, and barely engage. He no longer hung out with his friends. She could see the difference every day, and she said, "I just don't know what to do."
In the comments, she said the truck had an $800 monthly payment. Her husband regretted selling it, but told her he would rather have a car than downgrade from his dream truck. Even so, the loss hung over him. He told her, "I asked him why he hasn't been hanging out with his friends anymore and he told me because he sold his truck." He also said that everything they had done together revolved around the truck, so without it, it would not feel the same. At one point, he admitted he felt "resentment and bitterness" toward her, even though the sale had been his decision.
His friends reached out, but he felt weird and uncomfortable going back to the old activities without his own truck.
Eventually, the couple talked it through. He said that truck was his identity and part of who he was. Together, they came up with an unusual fix: they sold the car, used her car for commuting, bought a totaled truck just for the engine, stripped what they needed from it, and found another truck to put the engine into.
And just like that, the old version of him came back.
"He's back to his old self again and baby is gonna be here soon and we couldn't be more excited!!" the woman wrote.
