The week before the wedding, the stepmom was already testing the line in a cream dress.

The poster was married earlier this year, but the trouble started before the ceremony, while the poster's dad and stepmom were staying with the poster's sister. One afternoon, the sister was in the bathroom doing her hair when the stepmom walked in on the way out to dinner with friends and asked a simple question: "is this dress okay?"

The sister took one look and answered like she thought the dress was for dinner. "yeah it's cute!"

Then came the catch. The stepmom clarified what she meant. "okay I just wasn't sure if it was okay for the wedding after being"

The sister stopped cold. "sorry for the wedding ?!?"

"yeah?"

Now the dress wasn't just cute anymore. The sister looked at the color and went straight to the problem. "okay I'm a bit concerned about the colour?"

The stepmom tried to soften it. "but it's cream?"

That didn't work. The sister shut it down immediately. "you cannot wear that"

The warning was clear. The dress was not okay for the wedding.

The stepmom apparently ignored it.

By the time the wedding came around, she wore the cream dress anyway. The poster later wrote, "As you can see by the photo she did in fact wear the cream coloured dress AND also showed up to my rehearsal dinner in a full white outfit!"

That was only part of it. The stepmom had also turned up to the rehearsal dinner in full white, after already being told the cream dress was off-limits for the wedding. The outfit choices seemed to land in the same place: white, cream, and a lot of confidence.

There was one more detail. According to the poster, the stepmom had gone "shopping" for another dress but "couldn't find anything."

So the sequence was set: first the question in the bathroom, then the sister's warning, then the cream dress at the wedding, then the full white outfit at the rehearsal dinner, and finally the explanation that she had looked for something else and come back empty-handed.

For a wedding that had already been planned, the unexpected dress choices became their own subplot, one that started with, "is this dress okay?" and ended with the stepmom wearing it anyway.
