The new neighbor waited until the poster left for vacation, then cut off half of their tree without even a warning.

The tree wasn't just any tree. It had helped sell the property in the first place, one of the reasons the poster bought the place. So when the poster came home and saw half of it gone, the shock was immediate: the neighbor, who had lived there less than a year, had sent someone, or done it himself, while the poster was away and taken a huge chunk of the tree that stood on their side.

The poster said the neighbor had gone well over the property line to do it.

When the poster reacted, the response they got was not an apology or even much concern. Instead, people laughed about it and kept saying it was "legal." That didn't make the tree reappear, and it didn't change the fact that the work had been done without notice, while the poster was on vacation, and apparently from beyond where the line should have allowed.

The dismissiveness didn't stop there. The conversation also turned insulting, with disrespectful comments aimed at the poster's boobs. What should have been a straightforward confrontation about a tree became a pile-on of shrugging, joking, and crude remarks.

Then the neighbor himself added one more line to the mess. He said he wasn't "in the mood to deal with my emotions right now" because he'd had a "bad day."

That was the answer after the tree was cut in half. No notice, no permission, no heads-up before the trip, and no serious apology afterward, just the claim that he'd already had enough to deal with and didn't want to handle the poster's reaction too.
