A JetBlue passenger reached for an emergency exit after hearing a sound she thought meant the plane was failing, and the noise was just the Airbus A320's infamous "barking dog."
The moment set off during a JetBlue flight when the woman panicked over the strange clatter coming from the aircraft. According to the post, she believed something was wrong with the plane and moved to open an emergency exit.
The sound, though, was not a sign of danger. It was the normal A320 "barking dog" noise, a nickname for the loud, odd-sounding whine that comes from the aircraft's Power Transfer Unit, or PTU. The PTU is part of the hydraulic system, and its job is to balance pressure between the plane's hydraulic systems.
The post says the woman claimed her boyfriend was a "pilot," but that detail did not change what happened next: she heard the noise, panicked, and tried to act on that fear.
What she heard was a routine sound built into the aircraft's operation. What she did was anything but routine. The attempt to open the emergency exit turned a noisy but normal flight moment into a full-blown onboard scare.
The "barking dog" sound has a reputation for startling passengers who do not know what it is. On the A320, it can sound mechanical and wrong enough to convince someone something is breaking. In this case, that mistaken alarm was enough to send the passenger toward the emergency exit before the situation was understood.
The explanation, as the post lays it out, is straightforward: the PTU makes the barking-dog noise while working to equalize pressure between hydraulic systems. It is a normal part of the aircraft, not a failure.
But in the cabin, with the sound hitting at the wrong moment and fear taking over, the woman treated it like an emergency.
