A birthday lunch for one mother-in-law blew up over chicken tenders.
The family had gone out to a restaurant to celebrate the poster's MIL, and when the waiter started taking orders, the sister-in-law stepped in with a plan for all the kids: everyone would get the same kids' meal, chicken tenders, fries, and juice.
That didn't sit right with the poster. Their two children were 9 and 4, and, according to the poster, they do not eat like little nibblers. "2 chicken tenders and handful of fries will not fill them up," the poster said, making it clear that a small kids' plate was not enough for their table. There was also a practical point behind the pushback: the poster was paying for their children's meals.
So when the waiter reached them, the poster answered plainly that their kids would have adult meals instead.
The children ordered full meals. The sister-in-law's plan for a uniform kids' table was gone in a single sentence.
Afterward, the sister-in-law was furious. She told the poster they had embarrassed her in front of everyone and, worse, had made her own kids start questioning her. She had told them they were getting "the same thing all the other kids were eating," and now that promise had collided with what the poster ordered for their side of the family.
The entire disagreement came down to a restaurant table, a birthday lunch, and two very different ideas of what the kids should be served. One adult wanted every child on the same menu. Another refused to have their own children leave hungry just to match the crowd.
