A mother's attempt to confiscate her 16-year-old daughter's phone and laptop ended with a husband telling her, in front of that same daughter, that she had destroyed their trust for years.
The conflict had been building since the daughter was 13. According to her father, she once confided in her mother about having feelings for a family friend's son. At a family barbecue, the mother repeated it out loud, even to the boy himself, calling it "too cute" to keep private. The girl was mortified. Her father told his wife to stop sharing the child's business, but she brushed it off with, "just kids."
That was only the start. Over time, the father says he realized this was a pattern. Anytime the daughter told her mother something personal, it seemed to end up with other people. He says many of those conversations happened when he wasn't around, because his wife didn't like him interrupting "girl time."
The daughter, now 16, gradually pulled away. Her father became the one she went to for medical issues, school drama, and crushes. The mother, meanwhile, grew frustrated that her daughter no longer wanted "girl talk" and had become cold and distant.
Then the wife learned the daughter had her first boyfriend and hadn't told her. That set off the latest blowup. The father came home to find his wife yelling at the daughter and demanding her phone, laptop, and other items. He told her to leave the girl alone and give everything back. She refused. She kept screaming at him in front of their daughter.
He tried repeatedly to calm her down. Instead, he says, she grabbed his arm and dug her nails into his skin.
That was when he snapped back verbally. He told her she had been telling the daughter's business to other people for years, that family and friends knew details about the girl's personal life and medical history, and that "it was her fault our daughter doesn't trust her anymore."
The wife cried and locked herself in the bedroom. The father comforted his daughter and got her dinner. Later, he wondered if he had gone too far, especially as his wife gave him the silent treatment.
In an update, he said he was seriously considering the responses he'd received. He does not want his daughter to think this is okay for "her future husband to treat her this way." He wants his wife to do therapy on her own before any family sessions, saying, "I am not putting my daughter in a situation where her mother will probably use the therapy sessions to punish her." If his wife refuses, he says he will look into separation.
For now, he says he plans to send his daughter to stay with her aunt for the rest of the week while he talks to his wife. "I have realized my daughter needs her dad to keep her safe," he wrote. "I am scared for my future honestly but I am also hopeful that I can show my daughter she is loved and safe."
