Her period was late, the pregnancy test came back positive, and then her boyfriend smiled like he'd been waiting for it.
The 22-year-old poster says she had been with her boyfriend, also 22, for three years. They started as high school friends, reconnected in college, and lately the relationship had been "on the rocks." Adding to the pressure was his mother, who had been pushing the same message over and over whenever the topic of children came up.
"The joy of motherhood is like nothing else. You'll understand someday."
"I know it's hard right now. You know, a baby might bring you closer."
The boyfriend's mother had apparently been laying it on thick for a while, with lines like, "My husband and I fought constantly until we finally had [bf's name]," and, "Once you have a baby, everything else falls away. They're little miracle workers." She even told the poster, "You know, fatherhood changes people. I think [bf's name] just needs to experience it."
The poster says she was on the pill. She kept empty blister packs and leftover sugar pills in her nightstand, and sometimes preloaded a week's worth of pills into a pill organizer.
Then, a couple of weeks before posting, her period didn't come. She took a pregnancy test. It was positive.
She called her boyfriend right away.
When he got home and saw the test, she says he smiled and said, "oh my god, baby, this is great!"
The poster was stunned. She says they are both full-time students with jobs, they already have money problems, and she does not know whether she can go through with an abortion. She asked him, "what's going on??"
After he left her alone in the bathroom, she looked in the trash and found one of her blister packs there. At the bottom of the trash bag, she says, were seven regular birth control pills.
That is when she says the pieces clicked.
She believes her boyfriend tampered with her birth control. She also thinks he may have checked her Fitbit app to see when she was ovulating, since she tracks her period there.
Afterward, she told close friends. Their response was blunt: they told her she needs to leave him and stop "going crazy." She wrote that she felt like she needed to "grow a spine," and that she had to "figure my shit out/decide what to do."
Instead of going home, she went to her parents' house. She said they are religious and do not know what is happening. Meanwhile, her boyfriend keeps texting her to come home and talk.
In an edit, she gave her answer: she is terminating the pregnancy. She said she is chronically ill, that the pregnancy would be extremely risky, and that she does not want to bring a child into this environment. She made an appointment and said she is leaving him.
"I am leaving that goddamn scumbag scourge on my life far behind me, he just doesn't know it yet."
