The wedding dinner had barely started when the groom's mother spotted a small container outside and turned it into a family scandal.

The woman at the center of it was a 36-year-old guest who had come to her college friend's wedding excited to celebrate. She also had a medical condition that meant she could not eat gluten or dairy, and she said those foods would make her very sick. She disclosed the restrictions on the RSVP card, expecting the couple to have some kind of safe option.

Instead, the bride told her the venue couldn't guarantee anything gluten-free or dairy-free because of cross-contamination. The best suggestion, according to the poster, was that she could "make do with the salad and fruit."

Rather than create a fuss, she quietly packed her own food: "literally just grilled chicken and rice." She did not haul in a cooler or a full meal. When dinner was served, she stepped outside for about five minutes, ate quickly, and returned to the reception. She says she didn't make a scene, didn't bring anything smelly, and didn't take anything away from the event.

But someone noticed.

The groom's mother saw her with the container outside and started telling people she was "disrespecting the caterer" and "making the couple look cheap." Later, at the reception, she confronted the guest directly. She said she was "embarrassing the family" and should have eaten beforehand if she had a problem.

The guest explained that she wanted to stay for the full wedding and didn't want to faint or get sick. That did not settle it. The groom's mother called her selfish and said the wedding was "about the couple, not about your diet."

The disagreement didn't stop there. Some mutual friends also weighed in and agreed that she had made an asshole move and made the couple look bad. Faced with all that, she later asked whether she had crossed a line by bringing her own food at all.

In an update, she thanked people for their responses and said the comments helped her feel more secure in her choice. She said it kept her from second-guessing herself as much.
