"This is an old recipe passed down to me by my grandma," she says, and every year when September rolls around, it becomes the meal she looks forward to most. "My favourite meal to make at the beginning of September," she calls it, a casserole that takes patience, careful prep, and a lot of time at the stove.

This time, she spent over two hours making it. The work starts long before it ever hits the oven: chopping the vegetables, handling the meat, and lining everything up so the layers come out right. "They have to be layered and somewhat uniform," she says, and that step alone turns dinner into a project.

By the time it was finally done in the oven, the evening had already slipped into the usual bedtime rush. She needed to get the kids settled, so she asked her husband to take care of the food while she headed upstairs. She made sure to point out that everything he needed was ready.

"Put it away for me," she told him. "I even had clean Tupperware left out right beside it."

According to her, he agreed. "He said he would."

So she left the kitchen, went through the bedtime routine, and didn't go back downstairs. Once the kids were asleep, she brushed her teeth and went to bed, trusting that the casserole had been packed away and set aside for the next day.

It wasn't until the following morning that she got her answer.

She came downstairs and found the casserole exactly where she had left it, still sitting on the stovetop.

After more than two hours of prep, layering, and oven time, the dish was still out in the open, untouched and waiting on the stove where the night before's dinner had ended.
