Penny was called "the chosen one" so often that one drunk family dinner ended with a brutal comeback about the father who left.

The poster's family story starts before they were even born. Their mom had Penny with an old boyfriend, but Penny's biological father didn't stay around. When Penny was 3, the mom met the poster's dad, they married, and he adopted Penny. Later, the couple had the poster and the poster's brothers.

Growing up, Penny was, by the poster's telling, "always the apple of my dad's eye." The dad treated all the kids equally, but Penny kept turning that into a joke of her own. She would tell her siblings, "Dad was stuck with you guys, but he chose me." If the family talked about inherited traits, Penny would jump in with, "I didn't get anything from him except his last name, because I'm the chosen one."

That line never really went away. Even as adults, Penny still said it from time to time.

Recently, the siblings and their partners were out drinking together when Penny started up again, this time in front of one brother's newer girlfriend. She repeated the story, emphasizing that she was "the chosen one." The poster says they were a little drunk too, and they snapped back with, "Chosen by our dad, but you weren't chosen by your first dad, huh?"

The table went quiet fast. Penny looked hurt. The brothers immediately said the comment was uncalled for. The new girlfriend looked at the poster like they were "a douche." The poster shrugged it off in the moment, saying the joke was old, everyone had heard it before, and it was "a little ridiculous."

Their boyfriend stepped in, called an Uber, and got them out of the situation before it could get worse.

It did not end there. Afterward, the parents heard what happened and were furious, saying the poster had been rude. The poster pushed back, saying Penny had been obnoxious for years and that the joke had finally gone too far.

Now the family is split over what happened at the bar: one sibling's long-running "chosen one" joke, one drunk retort about a first father, and a night that ended with everyone angry.
