THE DIVORCE PRETENSE

A wife recounts years of verbal abuse and a crumbling marriage, where her husband announced divorce, mocked her as 'not the prize,' and briefly pretended commitment after his job loss.

He told everyone he was divorcing his wife before he even told her, then, after he lost his job, he suddenly wanted to stay married.

The poster says she is 38, her husband is 34, and they have been married six years, together nine. She says the relationship has had its ups and downs, but the biggest problem has been the way he speaks to her.

The worst of it came when their son was a year old. At 10 months postpartum, she says he looked at her and called her "fat and lazy," telling her, "I am fat and lazy and all I do is take care of the baby and work." She says she was still carrying baby weight while adjusting to new routines, working full time, and taking care of their baby plus four other children. She says she was doing all of that while working 40 hours a week.

Then came her birthday. She says he demanded that she not leave the house or he would divorce her. That same morning, she took her daughter to an appointment at UCLA. When she got back, she says he didn't even say hello. He was asleep in his game room, the same room, she says, where he had been sleeping for the past two months.

By then, she says, he had already been telling other people the marriage was over. He had said he was divorcing her, had spoken to an attorney, and had done all of that before ever telling her he wanted a divorce.

The insults kept coming. She says he told her she was "not the prize," adding, "I was not the prize, im almost 40 and have 4 kids 3 who are minors." He told her, she says, that "hes the prize, hes in his prime and makes good money and any women would love to be in my shoes and take care of his kids." She also says he invited his baby mother into the house to visit while she was out.

Then he lost his job.

After that, she says, he asked her to wait to move. He started talking nicer, acting different. But she says she kept moving forward anyway, because his behavior did not match someone who wanted to be with her.

Now, she says, he is telling family and friends that she is "a gold digger and leave as soon as he looses his job." He is also saying "he wanted to try to make it work but I am the one choosing to leave."

The post does not say why he lost his job, and it does not say whether the separation or divorce was ever finalized.
