ELEVATOR HARASSER UNMASKED

A man in a residential elevator cornered a woman coming home from the gym, barked at her to press a button for him, and then called her a "bitch" when she didn't move fast enough.

She had just stepped into the elevator wearing headphones when a neighbor got on from another floor and told her to press a number. She didn't hear him right away. Instead of waiting, he moved in close and snapped, "you shouldn't have the headphones on so you could hear people."

When she took the headphones off and asked, "what," he leaned in harder and said, "press 6 now, bitch."

The elevator was heading down to the parking garage, and 6 was the far corner of it. The poster later clarified that the neighbor was apparently parked there, so he had a reason for the request. At the time, though, the wife didn't know that, she just had a stranger in her face, barking orders.

Then the doors opened and another neighbor stepped inside.

The man's tone changed immediately. He backed off and said, "good you're here, I don't like her but I like dogs."

That wasn't the first warning sign. Someone in the building had already put up a handmade poster about the same man, describing aggressive harassment of other residents. The elevator incident suddenly looked less like a one-off and more like part of a pattern.

The poster called the police. According to what they were told, other residents already had restraining orders against the man. The officer's advice was blunt: the poster should get one too.

They also reported the incident to management and started looking into filing a civil harassment restraining order. From there, the question became what else needed to be done to make sure it was properly escalated and, eventually, to get the man evicted.

What began as a simple elevator ride ended with a neighbor shouting "press 6 now, bitch," a building-wide warning about his behavior, and a police report that suggested this was not his first run-in with residents.
