During a wedding, a groom's message etched on his shoe triggers a shocking altar moment that tests a priest, consent, and the boundaries of ceremony.

The wedding was already at the altar when the guests started laughing, and then Father Fábio Marinho noticed the message on the groom's shoe: "Help me, get me out of here."
What had looked like nervous laughter suddenly turned into the reason the ceremony stopped.
The incident took place in Uberlândia and later exploded online after Father Marinho talked about it on the "LendaCast" podcast. In the middle of the blessing, the priest realized the groom had glued the phrase to the sole of his shoe, turning a wedding detail into a public cry for escape.
That was enough for him to act on the spot. He treated the message as an impediment to the marriage and canceled the ceremony right there at the altar.
"Look, this is an impediment to me validating your marriage. Therefore, the wedding is canceled. You'll have to go through all the necessary procedures and decide if you really want to marry her, because you're asking for help," he said.
According to Marinho, the problem wasn't just the joke itself, it was what the joke said about consent. He said that during the ceremony he had already asked whether the groom was acting of his own free will, and the groom had answered yes. But once the priest saw the message, the situation changed completely.
"When I asked if it was of your own free will, you said yes. But now you're asking for help. This isn't a joke or theater. Leave the joking for the party with your guests. I'm not there to celebrate something that isn't serious. If the groom is asking for help, he doesn't want it. In the name of the Church, I am obliged, by canon law, to suspend the marriage. The marriage becomes invalid," he said.
Marinho also said marriage in the church requires seriousness, consciousness, and spontaneity, and that joking has no place in that moment.
The clip and his comments spread quickly across social media, where the story drew strong attention and split opinion. Some backed the priest's decision. Others said the groom's shoe message was only a joke.
But the priest's response was immediate: in his view, the wedding had stopped being a wedding the moment the groom asked for help at the altar.
