THE OVERPACKED MARRIAGE
On a cross-country trip, a couple battles obsession with packing and punctuality as mounting friction risks a fractured relationship and a road trip that tests every limit.

The trip was already ruined before the conference even started: the Suburban was packed so full the mirrors were blocked, and his wife was still finding more things to cram inside.
He is 36, she is 38, and they've been together eight years. They live in Arkansas, but every year she wants to go back to San Diego, where she's from. After they had a child, a 2-year-old daughter, she decided the family should drive instead of fly.
That's where the trouble began.
According to the poster, his wife overpacks every time. First it was his CX-7, loaded until it was bursting. Then they got a Suburban, helped by a $900 car allowance, and she filled that too. On the long drive west, he says she packed so much that he couldn't see the mirrors. They barely used any of it, but at every hotel stop he had to haul everything inside because she was afraid it would be stolen.
She was late, too. If he told her 10 a.m., he says she might not be ready until noon. Then they wouldn't leave the hotel until 12, and she'd still want to keep driving until midnight.
The breaking point came on a work conference trip. He had been sent to a conference with a nice hotel room and a resort setup, and the plan was to leave the baby with his mother. The day before the trip, his wife canceled that arrangement and brought the child along.
Then came the packing again.
He says she loaded the Suburban with more than he could believe: a tote of blankets, a tote of towels, and, as he put it, "Two of her clothes! Totes!!" At the hotel, the room became cluttered, and the night before leaving turned into a long session of packing and repacking items she never used.
So he told her straight: "your overpacking and insisting we fill every vehicle full and always being late makes me.miserable." He said traveling with her "makes traveling miserable."
Her reaction was explosive.
He says she accused him of wanting to hook up and cheat at these things, and shouted, "i just want to go hook up and cheat at these things." She told him she was filing for divorce. He wrote that she "freaked out."
By then they were already three hours late leaving for the conference, and he missed networking and vendor events. In later edits, he said he does help raise their child, packed for the trip himself, and is not a cheater. He also said he has tried to handle her issues, but her behavior has worsened over time. He says he worries about safety because he cannot see the side mirror, and added that she has ADHD and comes from a hoarder background.
"I am exhausted," he wrote. "If she left me I think I would be done with relationships, my own mental health is wrecked."
