The chicken was already ruined in the back of the car, and nobody realized it until dinner was halfway started.

A wife had planned a new recipe for that evening: a one-pot chicken and orzo. In the morning, she ordered the groceries online, picked them up around 11 a.m., and brought everything home around midday. One of the items was a whole, fresh, raw chicken in a sealed bag.

Then the chicken sat in the boot of the car all afternoon.

By 5:30 p.m., the wife was back from an afternoon walk with friends and ready to cook. She started on dinner, moving ahead with the recipe as if everything were fine. A few minutes later, the poster heard her sudden shout from the kitchen: "wtf, where has the chicken gone?"

That was when they realized the chicken had been left in the car the entire time, while the car sat in the sun on a day with a high of 16°C, or 60°F. The wife checked it and said it was still cool to the touch, somewhere between fridge temperature and room temperature.

The poster did not want to eat it.

He looked it up, Googling how long a chicken can be left in a car, and kept telling her not to cook it. But she kept preparing the meal anyway, saying, "we're going to eat the chicken." The poster pushed back hard. He said, "I've Googled it and we shouldn't eat the chicken."

At that point, the argument shifted from forgotten groceries to who was going to eat what. The poster suggested a compromise: she could eat the chicken, and he would make something else. That did not go over well. She had wanted to make the dinner for him, and the plan was still moving forward in the kitchen while he refused to budge.

He drew a line and said, "I'm not gong to eat it and I feel like I'm being made to eat a chicken against my will."

After that, the wife left to go buy another chicken from the store.

The result was a dinner plan derailed by one raw bird left in the wrong place for too long: a full chicken thrown out, a replacement trip to the store, and a husband who says he feels like an asshole for the whole mess.
