TWIN RUMOR RUNS AMOK
When a new neighbor misreads a visitor as infidelity, a small town rumor spirals through the block as friends chase truth while online chatter spreads like wildfire.

The rumor started with a stranger in a driveway and ended with a neighborhood group chat style meltdown: one new next-door neighbor decided the narrator was cheating, because she did not know he had an identical twin brother.
The narrator and his wife had lived in their neighborhood for about two years when a new couple moved in next door last April. The neighbor was married, had no kids, and worked from home. For months, nothing unusual happened.
Then, in the last week of June, the narrator's twin brother and the brother's wife came to visit. They flew in, took an Uber from the airport, and arrived in the middle of the week after lunch, right when the narrator and his wife were both at work. The narrator had given them remote access to the house through a smartlock, so they let themselves in, dropped off their luggage, and settled in.
That night, the four of them met for dinner downtown. The next morning, the new neighbor intercepted the narrator's wife before she left for work and asked if she knew anything, or had noticed anything different about him.
What the neighbor claimed was blunt: she said she had seen "me" bringing another woman home the day before, in a different car.
The wife immediately realized what had happened. The "other woman" was the twin brother's wife. She explained that the narrator's twin was in town, then pulled up a dinner photo showing the brother and his wife. The neighbor was embarrassed.
But the story didn't stop there.
Later, the narrator got a text from another neighbor asking "what have you been up to," because the new neighbor had already been talking to other people about it. According to the narrator, the rumor had spread to at least three other neighbors. One post even put it this way: "women have women behind their back."
The narrator and his wife considered going around and explaining the whole thing to the rest of the neighborhood themselves, but that would take effort. They did walk around with the twin brother and sister-in-law, though not everyone saw them.
Online, the reaction became its own kind of neighborhood gossip. One comment read: "Shareing this after the whole coldplay concert issue lol (i'm sure that ceo dude has no twin)"
For the narrator, the frustrating part was not the misunderstanding itself. It was how fast it spread, and how nobody seemed interested in checking before talking.
