The betrayal started with a text thread and ended with college loans on the chopping block.

A woman who says she has spent years trying to rebuild her life after a brutal divorce is now facing a second rupture: her younger sister, she discovered, has been secretly close with the ex-husband who blew up her marriage, and is best friends with the woman he left her for.

She says she normally wouldn't ask strangers online for advice, but the people around her have been calling her a "petty, scorned, bitter woman." So she laid out the history.

Her ex-husband, now 43, was her college sweetheart. She trusted him completely, she said, until she learned he was in love with a much younger colleague, around 24 at the time. Worse, the affair was an open secret at his workplace. When she confronted him, he offered a line she says still sticks in her head: "I'm sorry. I tried really hard not to fall for her."

She says he did not seem sorry. He seemed like he wanted her to leave. So she did.

That was six years ago. Their son was four. She says it was the worst time of her life. She wanted him to fight for their family, but he quickly signed the divorce papers and did not fight for custody. After the split, she says it took years of therapy to feel normal again and to stop checking the other woman's social media. The woman, she wrote, was "very pretty and charming." His family liked her. So did the friend group. One mutual friend even said, "I don't support cheating but I mean, look at *her*."

She cut those friends off too.

Three years ago, the ex-husband and the colleague married. They now have a daughter. The current arrangement is that their son stays with his father on weekends and holidays.

Then came last week.

The poster learned that her sister, 28, had been in touch with the ex all these years. That part alone, she said, might have been forgivable; the sister had been close to both of them when the marriage was intact, and had seen him as a brother.

What she could not get past was the rest: the sister is actually best friends with the ex's new wife, and had hidden it for six years.

She found out by accident after the sister left her phone at her house. She saw several texts from the wife. When she asked about it, the sister brushed it off and said it wasn't a big deal.

The poster said that was enough. She told her sister she could do what she wanted, but she would be cutting her off completely, including stopping help with her college loans, and going no contact.

The sister said she was being unreasonable, petty, and unable to move on from something that happened a long time ago. She also said the wife was a lovely person and a good friend, and that she would be "fucked, financially speaking."

The reply was simple: "go fuck yourself."

Her parents, she says, agree with the sister.

"AITA?"
