THE NAME DILEMMA

A new baby arrives to a couple divided over months of name finalists, as one parent wants to ditch both options and start fresh with a new possibility.

A baby was born, and the name vanished.

For months, the parents had lived with two contenders: Hollis and Abbott. They had gone back and forth through the pregnancy, unable to lock in a favorite, then made the choice to wait until the baby arrived before deciding for good.

That plan collapsed almost immediately.

Once the baby was actually here, the poster said it became obvious that "babies both look like no name and every name." The tiny new person did not make Hollis or Abbott feel more right. If anything, the decision became messier.

According to the poster, "for a few reasons my husband wants to completely drop both names and start from the beginning." The problem was not that the names were suddenly disliked in some simple, clean way. They had spent months attached to them. "We would love these names for months and suddenly see lots of issues with them," the poster said.

The poster did not want to throw the whole thing out. After all that time, restarting the search felt like too much. "That seems insane," the poster said.

So the family ended up in an odd post-birth naming limbo: two longtime finalists on the table, one husband ready to scrap them, and one parent unwilling to begin again from zero. The original pair, Hollis and Abbott, were still the names they had spent pregnancy circling. But now there was a third possibility in the mix: Ferris.

That was where things stood. The baby had arrived, the old certainty had not, and the couple was now weighing whether to keep one of the names they had carried for months or abandon both and start fresh.

The poster opened the conversation with two direct questions: "What are your thoughts on these names?" and "Any other suggestions of things we can consider?"
