A secret paternity test blew up a marriage, and the fallout started the moment a father admitted he had spent years doubting his own son because the boy was darker-skinned than he was.

The poster was a 29-year-old white man married to a 30-year-old Black woman. They had two children: a 5-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl. From the beginning, he said, he fixated on the son's appearance. "He is noticeably darker than my wife. He doesn't look half white," he wrote. Family and friends asked questions too, and the uncertainty sat with him. Still, he said, he tried to trust his wife.

"I had doubts, but I initially decided to trust my wife," he explained. For a while, he said, he loved his son regardless.

Then their daughter was born. She looked like him, and that changed everything. He became convinced the boy wasn't his. He said he started resenting both his son and his wife, even as he kept up the appearance of normal family life. Eventually, he secretly ordered a paternity test.

The result ended the suspicion in one direction and started a new crisis in another: the boy was his. "I was relieved to learn that my son is in fact mine," he wrote. After that, he said the relationship at home actually improved. He and his wife were even talking about having a third child.

Then he told her about the test.

"She flipped out," he wrote. She called him racist. She told him he had made their son feel unloved for years. He said she wanted to move out and take the children after quarantine. When people reacted to his post, the judgment was blunt: "YTA."

A month later, he returned with an update. The couple was separated. He had moved out to his parents' home and barely saw the children. He apologized and admitted what he had done.

"I didn't want to hold myself accountable before," he said. "It was never my intention to be racist but I did treat my son differently due to his skin color when you strip it down to its roots."

He said he was trying to do better.

In a later update in 2023, he said he and his ex-wife had briefly reconciled for almost a year, but the marriage still fell apart. Counseling failed. She could not trust him again. The divorce was finalized early in 2022.

By then, he said he was living in an apartment and following a custody schedule. He said he still loved his ex-wife, but his focus was on rebuilding his relationship with both children. "My kids are all that matters," he wrote. "He hasn't heard about the paternity test and I hope he never will."
