A wedding date was on the calendar, and suddenly two last names had turned into a problem: Bacon and Butts.
The poster opened with a throwaway account, saying they wanted to talk about their real names without tying the story to their main profile. Then came the setup. They and their fiancée are both women, they're getting married at the end of the year, and they had always assumed they would hyphenate their surnames if they ever married.
That plan sounded simple enough until the poster laid out the names themselves.
Her surname is Bacon. Her fiancée's surname is Butts.
They had not expected to fall in love with someone else with what the poster called a "silly" surname. At first, the whole thing was funny. The pair could joke about it, laugh at the coincidence, and toss around possible combinations without taking any of it too seriously.
But once the wedding date was actually set, the joke stopped feeling so light.
Neither woman wants to give up her name completely. Hyphenating seemed like the obvious compromise, but the possible combinations were awkward enough that they no longer felt "that" much better. The poster said the options now felt "crazy," and the more the wedding approached, the more real the decision became.
What had started as a cute quirk of the relationship had turned into a naming dilemma with real paperwork attached.
The poster said the humor was wearing off. The names that once sounded amusing now came with stress, because this was no longer a hypothetical conversation about what might happen someday. It was a real decision, tied to a real marriage, with the clock running toward the end of the year.
By the end of the post, the poster was asking strangers if anyone else had faced the same issue and what they would do in the same situation.
"Now it's really sinking in that we have a dilemma and I'm starting to stress 😭," the poster wrote, before adding: "Has anyone else faced this issue? What would you do in our situation?"
