GHOSTED FOR A DOG
When a woman suspects her boyfriend ghosted her, she brings a senior shelter dog into the mix, and a paused relationship devolves into a tense clash over who un paused whom.
Was this a breakup, or should she have waited?

He told her to "press pause on our relationship," flew off to Washington, and then vanished so completely that she thought she'd been dumped.
The boyfriend said he was going to visit his family and that he "needed some time to work on himself." When the narrator asked how you even pause a relationship, he asked to have that respected. So she did. After he left, she texted to "let me know he arrived safe" and "say hi to his mom for me." No reply came back.
So she tried again. And again. Eventually, she called and left a message asking the question hanging over the whole thing: had he broken up with her? With no answer, and with her friends agreeing that he'd effectively disappeared, she settled on the only explanation that fit. She thought "he'd ghosted me."
She was bummed. A friend suggested a new hobby or a show, something to fill the silence. Instead, she made a bigger decision. "I decided to get a dog," she later said. It was not a casual pet choice, either. Her boyfriend is "horribly allergic to pet dander," which had kept her from ever considering an animal before. But if the relationship was over, the rule no longer seemed to matter.
So she adopted a senior shelter dog. "He's a senior dog from the shelter that needed rescuing," she explained.
Six weeks later, the missing boyfriend reappeared with a text. He was back, he said, and would come over the next day so they could talk. She was stunned. "What relationship," she asked, because from her side, there was nothing to unpause. He said he was "back and ready to unpause our relationship," and then expanded on it, he had done a lot of self-examination, wanted to move forward on his life path, and even started talking about moving in together.
Then he saw the dog.
Everything stopped. He immediately started freaking out, asking how she could get a dog when she knew how sick he gets. She shot back that, since he had broken up with her, she didn't think it mattered. He insisted he had not broken up with her at all, only said he was pressing pause and visiting family. She pointed to the silence and the unanswered messages. "Not answering texts is ghosting," he argued back and forth.
The argument ended with him heading out the door, claiming he was getting an allergic reaction while still standing in the doorway, not even inside.
Now she was left with the dog, the boyfriend, and the mess between them. If she breaks up with him, she said, she's basically agreeing with him that he never broke up with her and that she was the asshole for getting the dog.
