When a wife locks the bedroom door for peace of mind while her husband works late, a surprising early return unleashes suspicion and tests their fragile trust.

Her husband came home early, found the bedroom door locked, and immediately accused her of hiding something.
For this couple, the timing of work shifts is the whole setup. The poster says, "I work first shift and my husband works second shift." That means she is often alone at night, and he "gets home around 2am." Most nights, the routine is simple: she's in the bedroom, he's at work, and before she goes to sleep, she unlocks the door so he can get in.
But when she is home alone, she locks it.
"I lock the bedroom door when I am home and he is working," she explained. It's not about shutting him out. It's about peace of mind. She said she used to hear noises, get up to check them, and then find out they were usually "my cats or an appliance." After enough false alarms, she stopped checking every sound. "So I lock the door so if I hear a noise, I know it's the cats or an appliance and if not, I have a locked barrier between me and whatever it could be."
That routine held until one night when her husband's shift ended early. He had been "cut from work because it was extra slow." Instead of getting home near 2 a.m., he walked in hours ahead of schedule. The problem was, she never heard him come through the front door. The TV was on. The air conditioner was on. By the time he reached the bedroom, the door was still locked.
She did not spring up right away. She had to pause the TV, move a cat, and get out of bed to unlock it.
That was enough to set him off.
He started questioning her about why the door was locked and what she was hiding. She told him she wasn't hiding anything, only that she locks the bedroom when she's in there and he's working "just in case." But he didn't buy it. In his mind, the locked door meant something else, especially because she hadn't been instantly there to let him in.
She says that's the whole story: a bedroom door locked while she was alone, then unlocked before sleep as usual. He says he still doesn't believe her.
